173 Millard Avenue in Newmarket.  It’s the perfect house to Raise kids, grow into and when you’ve outgrown it… you build upon this impressive massive lot, perched on the edge of a semi-private ravine and family friendly park.

What is it about 173 Millard that should make it your obsession?

It is best said …  In the owner’s own words…

Our house is situated on one of the best lots in town. It is a double lot (100 x 130) which backs onto Haskett Creek Park – a sports facility, green space and oasis. Chapel Creek (named after a neighbour across the street) meanders through the park and makes for a perfect place stroll during every season. The four soccer fields are being decommissioned and the park will simply be green space. The public tennis courts and playground are on the other side of Millard Ave and open for all to use.

Our walk out bungalow is perfectly situated between the charm of old town Newmarket and the bustle of Yonge street, home to Upper Canada Mall and major chain stores. The house is perfectly sized with three bedrooms upstairs and a large bedroom and ensuite bath downstairs. The family room downstairs feels nothing like a basement as the large window and walk out provide plenty of light and views of the well treed backyard and park.

Sitting on the deck or back patio is like being at a retreat in the Muskoka’s. It is a calm oasis. The mature trees are home to numerous species of song birds. We also have Blue Herons, ducks and owls as frequent visitors. The bustle of the town disappears as you are surrounded by nature. We barbecue and eat outside most nights during the summer months.

Houses on this strip of Millard Ave don’t come up for sale very often. The street has very little turn over with many of the residents being second generation owners in their homes (they grew up in the homes then took them over). It is a real neighbourhood as we are surrounded with wonderful, community minded people. It doesn’t get much better than this section of Newmarket!

Town of Newmarket:
Newmarket is a progressive community which always rates high on the “best communities to live in” list. While within commuting distance to Toronto and Markham, Newmarket has a growing business and industrial economy of its own.  It is home to York Regional Headquarters – which is in the process of a massive expansion- , a provincial courthouse and world class hospital – South Lake Regional Health Center.

Newmarket has fantastic access to highways as it is flanked by the 404 to the east and 400 to the west. Commuting is made easy as the GO train service stops right in town at the Tannery – an easy 15 minute walk. Service on the GO has improved tremendously with more trains and capacity added regularly. A new station is proposed at Mulock drive which will allow all day commuter service between Union Station and Newmarket. Transit within town is excellent as dedicated Viva bus lanes serve Davis Drive and lanes are expanding to include Yonge street.

Schools in Newmarket are excellent. The primary school (J.R. Bell) is just across the park on Queen street while there are a number of High Schools in town each specializing in different aspects of education (sports, arts and languages) We sent our daughter to French immersion and couldn’t have been happier with the experience. The school was excellent with outstanding teachers, high standards and well rounded curriculum. It was so successful that our daughter went on to university to study psychology – in French!

The downtown section of Newmarket has been well preserved and kept alive with many small shops and restaurants flourishing. There is a fantastic variety of great food to be found on the street including Mexican, Hungarian, Chinese and nouveau cuisine. There are numerous pubs throughout the town to enjoy a meal or a pint with friends. The Riverwalk Common, just behind Main Street, is home to a variety of events and festivals as well as a community centre, splash park and outdoor rink. It is a wonderful gathering spot for everyone.

Newmarket is situated near the Holland Marsh, the breadbasket of Ontario. It’s lush black soil grows some the best vegetables in the country. This is the key to the thriving farmers market which takes place every Saturday morning (May – Oct) which is filled with the best produce our province grows.

Newmarket is a dream for those interested in sports and outdoor activities. The Tom Taylor Trail which runs along the Holland River extend from Aurora up to Holland Landing. It is perfect for a Sunday morning run, ride or stroll. There are dedicated bike lines cutting across the town from Upper Canada Mall on the west to Leslie St. To the east making biking safe and convenient. The Community has excellent sports facilities, many of which have been updated. The Magna Center is the centre point for hockey, swimming and numerous other activities. Newmarket has 4 indoor arenas (with a total of 8 ice pads) and two outdoor rinks for winter fun. The surrounding area is home to some of the best golfing in the province – public courses include Pheasants Run, Cardinal and St. Andrew’s Valley.

There are numerous festivals throughout the year in Newmarket. Many take place in Fairy Lake such as the Arts & Craft festival, Rib Fest and Ecology Festival. Main Street is home to Canada Day Celebration and the River Walk Common (behind Main St.) is home the annual Music Festival – which is a must for music lovers. During the holiday season Riverwalk Common hosts the cavalcade of light a highlight of the year.
